New President and New Possibilities for MOSH

JACKSONVILLE – The Board of Trustees for MOSH announces the appointment of Maria Hane as the new Museum Director, effective June 22, 2009.

“The Board and staff are very excited to have Maria Hane as the new President of the Museum.  Her demonstrated leadership skills over the past 15 years with the Cummer and Mayor John Delaney will help MOSH to reposition itself as a premier cultural and educational institution in Northeast Florida.”--- Dori Walton, Chair, Board of Trustees of MOSH

Hane is an accomplished non-profit leader.  Her background includes more than five years of museum operations experience with the Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens, managing key initiatives such as the $16 million Edward W. Lane, Jr. Building and Olmsted Garden restoration project and leading the rigorous ten-year Museum Reaccreditation self-study and site visit team.  As Deputy Director of Operations she initiated a $2.5 million Ten-Year Facility and Grounds Maintenance Plan to address significant deteriorating conditions and stabilize long-term investments in museum repairs and preservation.  In her tenure she was also selected to manage $15 million in museum construction and capital improvement projects, including compliance with grants, contract oversight, and donor relations for the former Woman’s Club of Jacksonville (new Edward W. Lane, Jr. Building).  The museum was recently recognized for the exterior restoration of this building with an award from the Jacksonville Historic Preservation Commission.  As Director of Communications at The Cummer, she lead re-branding efforts and restructured marketing strategies that reduced costs and increased attendance over the last five years.

“We are pleased to have Maria’s experience and leadership at MOSH.  We look forward to having her help build on the strong foundation of MOSH and lead the museum into its next phase.”--- John Magevney, Incoming Chair, Board of Trustees of MOSH.

Prior to her years at The Cummer, Hane served as the Director of Written Communications for Mayor John D. Delaney working on message strategy, positioning, and content for key initiatives such as The Better Jacksonville Plan and the Don’t Trash Jacksonville campaign.

In her more than 15 years in the non-profit sector she has also built a 501(c) 3 organization by leading a grassroots neighborhood revitalization project and has served in leadership roles that include funding and volunteer development, communications, board relations and strategic planning.

“MOSH is a cultural icon in Jacksonville and I am delighted to be a part of this great institution that I have known since I was a child,” said Hane.  “The opportunity to be a part of reinvigorating and repositioning this museum is wildly exciting.  The foundation that lives currently and the possibilities for inspired vision are wonderful challenges to take on for both the museum and the City.”

“The new leadership in two of our City’s most prominent cultural institutions [MOSH and The Cummer] announced in the last week truly strengthens and refreshes Jacksonville’s cultural landscape.  Rarely does the convergence of two strong and experienced leaders offer such fresh and energizing potential in one industry – in this case Jacksonville’s cultural value will surely grow stronger,” said Cultural Council Executive Director Robert Arleigh White.

Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday – Friday; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday; and 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday.  Museum admission is $9 for adults, $7.50 for military and senior citizens, $7 for children 3-12, and free for children 2 and under and members.
