TAMPA BAY HURRICANE EXPO NAMED OFFICIAL DROP-OFF SITE FOR OPERATION MEDICINE CABINET™

Tampa, Fla. (May 18, 2009) – The 2009 Tampa Bay Hurricane Expo has been added to the list of drop-off sites for the multi-county initiative, Operation Medicine Cabinet™. The City of Temple Terrace Police Department will be responsible for the collection of unused or expired medications during the Expo.
Each year, local emergency managers stress the importance of having enough medication to last at least one week after the devastation of a hurricane as part of a complete hurricane preparedness kit. Now, more than ever, is the best time to check all medicine cabinets for unused or expired medication before the onset of hurricane season. Tampa Bay residents can drop off the expired or unused medication anonymously at the City of Temple Terrace Police Department booth during the 2009 Tampa Bay Hurricane Expo at MOSI.

Operation Medicine Cabinet™ is a four-county effort to remove unused or expired prescription drugs, as well as over-the-counter medications, from homes. By removing the unused medication, the community can do its part to help reduce drug abuse in youth. Medicine collected through this program will be incinerated, as opposed to being flushed down the drain or sent to a landfill, to avoid polluting the environment. Drop off DOES NOT ALLOW FOR COMMERCIAL PHARMACEUTICAL DISPOSAL (i.e. nursing homes, physician’s offices, etc.). For more information, visit http://www.hcada.com/.
