2009 Interns Rock the Association!

The Florida Attractions Association was fortunate to have a team of four talented interns to assist us with producing the 2009 Annual Conference and Trade Show and to produce audio/visual and Internet enhancements for the FAA.  The Association appreciates their contributions to ensure a successful Conference!

I was brought in to the FAA family several months ago to help with the planning and implementation of the 2009 Annual Conference and Trade Show. This process included anything, and everything, from Database work for Registration and Silent Auction to communication with several of the members. It was a learning experience, to say the least, to be involved in the many aspects of the planning process.

Although this was my first conference, I believe that it was a successful one. It was so refreshing to see the interaction between all of the members at the conference and to feel like I was in the midst of a community of family and friends. Especially in a time where people seem genuinely uninterested in their work, it was nice to see that the attraction industry still maintains a level of fun. The contributions and overwhelming participation by the members was particularly impressive.

My involvement with this year’s conference has been an experience that I will, no doubt, use in my future endeavors. I have learned that not everything goes as planned and that patience is the best way to overcome a problem. The communication skills, as well as the logistics work I have done, will be pivotal building blocks in any future prospects that I find myself taking on.

I feel as though I have been spoiled here, at FAA, and have really grown to appreciate them as employers, but also as friends. I am truly grateful to have had this experience and I thank everyone that attended the conference for being so welcoming of me. I hope that everyone enjoyed the conference as much as I have enjoyed my time at FAA!

Daniel Lupfer Willie Sykes, Jr.

My involvement in the Florida Attractions Association first started as a technical
helper around the attractions office. My involvement in those tasks included
networking, new computer setup, and figuring out a problematic backup system; and of course, I helped around with general office tasks when needed. (Including climbing up into the attic to diagnosing an air conditioning unit that had sprung a leak)

As time moved closer to the 2009 annual conference, my duties shifted towards
PowerPoint show creation. In the immediate days before departing to Sarasota for
the conference, the need to finalize the presentation software settings was needed, so
on the days that we did read throughs, I made sure our video and PowerPoint
transitions would be smooth during the conference. At the conference I continued to work on PowerPoint and to organize the cds
needed to play the background-music that played in the different breaks.

Starting Wednesday, I worked mainly with PSAV, the Audio/Visual provider, to insure that our needs were met so the presentations went off without any problems. From the conference launch to the finale, I pretty much just worked in prepping the PowerPoint shows, making sure the videos were cued to play and at nights, continue to update and work on the PowerPoint shows for the next day.

After arriving home and a good nights rest, I have started to help Willie on the new
.com website, and continue to help with general technology needs around the office.

I was born and raised in Daytona Beach, Fl and I am attending Florida State University.
I was introduced to Florida Attractions Association after responding to a position posted on Florida State’s website. I previously developed websites for The Department of Management Services, a few small companies, and for classes.  I decided I would apply to gain more experience with web developing. At the interview, I quickly sensed the family atmosphere and love that they shared amongst each other. They made me a part of that atmosphere with the task of redeveloping the www.floridaattractions.com website.  This task involved me learning a new program to develop the site with, working closely with Bill Lupfer to meet the goal and vision of the site, and coordinating with all the staff to have various content implemented onto the site.

As the conference time rolled around I prepared myself to be bored listening to presentation, dealing with uninteresting people, and eating the standard dried out chicken breast. To my surprise, the presentations were fun and interesting, especially with Mark hosting. The people were exciting to be around and the food was anything but typical. Overall the conference was very enjoyable and I can say it was one of the best I have attended. It was interesting to see how chaotic things were at the office and how everyone played their role to bring about a successful event.

After the website is complete and my time with Florida Attraction Association has ended, I would have gained more than content to fill the experience section of my resume. I have learned a lot from working with Bill, Mike, Linda, Royce, Daniel, Dana, and some people from the conference that will be helpful in my future endeavors.
